"Mario Kart 64" is now available on the Wii U Virtual Console for the affordable price of $9.99. It was launched on Thursday, Dec. 29.

The original "Mario Kart 64" video game was released in the United States back in 1996, and it turned out to be one of the most popular games for the Nintendo 64, having sold 9.87 million copies worldwide. The game was the first 3D entry in the series, which gave way to more dynamic tracks in contrast to the Super Nintendo original. It also introduced items in the "Super Mario" franchise, which have now become iconic, like the dreaded blue shell.

According to Nintendo, the "Mario Kart 64" game includes 20 different courses which involve a lot of dips, alleyways, jumps, tunnels, and bridges. As it did back in the 90s, it will surely capture the attention and love of race-driving gamers, with the smooth and precise control provided by Nintendo's Virtual Console service.

According to Venture Beat, many long-time gamers should consider purchasing the Wii U Virtual Console version of the classic "Mario Kart 64" video game because of the nostalgia it brings to those who grew up back in the '90s. While "Mario Kart 8" was indeed a true masterpiece, "Mario Kart 64" is also an equal classic with a better battle mode and unique levels designed for combat.

First time buyers of "Mario Kart 64" will have to pay $9.99 to avail its Wii U Virtual Console version, but according to Attack of the Fan Boy, those who owned the game on the Wii Virtual Console can have the game transferred to their Wii U for a cheaper and discounted price of $2.

There are also other games set to arrive on the 3DS Virtual Console in the months to come. For those gamers who aren't interested in racing, they could consider checking out "Castlevania: Dracula X" once it arrives this week.
