'Married at First Sight' season 4 updates: Derek speaks out after split; FYI greenlights spinoff
Derek Schwartz, whose marriage with Heather Seidel ended in the previous episode of "Married at First Sight" season 4, has spoken up about his experience on the show.
Derek and Heather went their separate ways just two weeks into the six-week social experiment. Unfortunately, Heather wasn't open to going on despite Derek's willingness to keep working on the marriage.
In a recent interview with The New York Post, Derek said that he regrets that he and Heather didn't get to know each other better and that he wishes things had turned out differently.
Derek also told the outlet that it became obvious during their honeymoon in Puerto Rico that Heather wasn't very keen on spending time with him. According to the "Married at First Sight" cast member, there was practically no physical affection between them at the time, except for when they walked back to their hotel with their arms around each other. Other than that, they didn't hug, hold hands or become physically affectionate in other ways.
Derek also recalled an off-camera incident in which Heather threatened to leave the show until a producer reminded her that she couldn't just run away. He also said that he reached out to his ex before "Married at First Sight" season 4 debuted. Unfortunately, he never heard back from her.
"It's crazy that we were married, and I don't know her well enough to have a feeling one way or another," Derek told the NY Post. "I have no ill will towards her," he added.
But while he doesn't harbor any anger towards Heather, Derek confessed that he was "hurt" by the experience.
"It hurt me so much that she wanted to focus on the things that she didn't like and didn't even give a chance to get to know me or to learn about the person I am, or why we were matched," he said. "I wouldn't expect somebody who's willing to marry a stranger to be so closed off and so judgmental," he continued.
Meanwhile, Deadline reported that FYI had given the green light to 12 episodes of a "Married at First Sight" spinoff, which will be titled "Married at First Sight: Second Chances." The upcoming series will reportedly follow David Norton and Vanessa Nelson, both of whom appeared in the reality show's third season, as they attempt to find love again.
"Married at First Sight" airs Tuesdays at 8:45 p.m. EDT on FYI.
