'Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain' Release Date News: Figurine with Squeezable Chest Sparks Controversy
The upcoming game "Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain" has been immersed in controversy following the abrupt departure of game developer Hideo Kojima from Konami, a resignation that is supposed to take place after the game is released in September 2015.
Another controversy involves the figurine for Quiet, a female character in the game, which was found to have squeezable chest when it was shown on Tuesday.
The character of Quiet in "Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain" was revealed way back in 2013. Even then many gamers thought that it was irrational that an expert sniper would be dressed in a revealing lingerie and torn tights. At that time Kojima stated that the character was designed to have fewer clothes as the game developers wanted her to be "sexy" to encourage fans to indulge in "cosplay," which is a rage in Japan and increasingly becoming popular in the United States. Kojima also said then that the figurine would be created to drive sales. This apparently resulted in the Quiet figurine receiving a "pliable cleavage."
However, Mashable cited rising feminist sentiments in the gaming industry, predicting that the figurine will not be received well. It noted that the gaming industry has changed since the character was revealed in 2013.
Despite Kojima's defense of the barely clothed Quiet figurine, very few are buying into his explanation that "Quiet was created as a response to scantily clad game characters who are excessively exposed."
Kojima also hinted at a "secret reason for her exposure," which would be revealed in the game.
The Verge said video games have evolved enough "to also tolerate heroines dressed appropriately for their roles." As for the figurine for Quiet, she is very much like her character in the game and the only difference is an additional head with eyes painted black with mascara, the Verge said.
