'Minecraft: The Movie' release date, update, news: Steve Carell joins cast
While some are skeptical about its success, there are several who believe that "Minecraft: The Movie" will be a hit not just to its fans, but to a greater audience.
According to reports, Warner Bros. acquired the film rights to "Minecraft" in February 2014. Details about it, howeverm are still scarce. It is known though that it will be directed by "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" creator Rob McElhenney, who is said to have worked alongside "Wonder Woman" screenwriter Jason Fuchs for the latest draft of the script.
But before McElhenney was given the director's position, "Reel Steel" director Shawn Levy was tapped to the project. However, he was removed from the production because game developer Mojang did not approve of his style.
Aside from the director, reports say that the movie is already in the casting stage. Variety detailed that the first star to be associated with the film is "The Office" cast member Steve Carell. Although there is no word yet regarding his role, he may be playing an important character.
Since Carell is no stranger to voice acting, he is likely a perfect fit for the animated film. Carell's credits in the voice-acting work include "Despicable Me," "Over the Hedge," and "Horton Hears a Who."
As for the movie plot, nothing is revealed yet but reports suggest that the movie is going to bring in new stories since the game is not based on a traditional story narrative. This may also be the reason why "Minecraft: The Movie" is experiencing development delays and challenges.
Nonetheless, the film may take inspiration from "The LEGO Movie." More updates will come soon so fans should stay tuned. "Minecraft: The Movie" is set to be released in May 25, 2019.
