'Mob Psycho 100' episode 11 spoilers: Reigen takes on Claw, proves he's more than just a con-man

The boss of the infamous psychic organization Claw had arrived — or so it seemed for the few minutes it took him to get past the army of Awakened psychics at the door right into the power-neutralizing chamber where Mob, Teru and Ritsu were imprisoned,

From there, it gradually became clear that Mob's master and alleged spirit specialist Reigen really did have acting abilities worthy of a Galaxy Award. He also possessed the conceit to carry on with his pretense for as long as he could get away with it. Luckily, the Awakened were not a hard audience to convince.

Reigen had also apparently put a GPS tracker on Mob's phone.

Reigen may not have psychic powers but he cared deeply for Mob who failed to show up for his part time work at the "Spirits and Stuffs Consultation Office" that day. So the master, armed with nothing but a handy bag of hataka salt, set out on a one-man hunt for his apprentice, at the eventual expense of his own life.

In attempting to keep Mob from going berserk and acting against the rule Reigen had so painstakingly inculcated into his psyche, the master ended up on the wrong side of a Scar's sword. This was how the eleventh episode of "Mob Psycho 100" ended.

It wasn't clear whether Sakurai's sword did indeed kill Reigen but the episode 12 preview showed Mob seemingly reaching 100% at the sight of his unconscious master sprawled out on the floor.

The next episode titled "Mob and Reigen" is also going to be the finale of the first season. The anime series is inspired by the popular "Mob Psycho 100" webcomics created by ONE, who was also responsible for "One Punch Man."

Isaac Ackers of Crunchyroll wrote a compelling article about the importance of Reigen's role in the series. In a universe overrun by powerful psychics whose motivations were geared towards domination, one ordinary, powerless man took under his wing the arguably most powerful psychic of them all and made every tireless effort to keep Mob from using his powers for hurtful purposes.

Reigen may have his faults, but when he said, "Become a good person. That is all," he was not just saying the words, he was also living by them. It may have seemed like words that a non-psychic master would tell his psychic apprentice to keep himself from getting beaten up once Mob figured out he was nothing but a fraud. But "Mob Psycho 100" episode 11 proved that underneath the conceit and the pretenses, there really was a thinking adult inside Arataka Reigen.

The ending sequence that features Miyo Sato's mesmerizing paint-on-glass animation depicts Reigen's morning habits and was done to compensate for the lack of information on Reigen's personal life in the source material.

"Mob Psycho 100" episode 12 airs on Monday, Sept. 26 at 11 p.m. JST on Tokyo MX.
