'Narcos' season 3 spoilers: Agent Pena featured in new image; production begins
The discussions about "Narcos" season 2 have yet to cease but the cast and crew are already back to work for season 3 of the hit series.
Despite the reports that there will be less of Javier Pena (Pedro Pascal) in "Narcos" season 3 now that Pablo Escobar (Wagner Moura) is dead, the first promotional image shows he will still be part of the action.
The photo shows the DEA agent addressing a crowd about what is presumed to be the death of the Colombian kingpin and the end of the Cali Cartel.
There is no word if Pena will still be involved in taking down the new cartel in town—Medellin as he already returned to the United States for a new mission. The "Narcos" season 3 image shows that he is indeed in the U.S.
The show prides itself to follow history to the letter even if it meant ending Escobar's life despite the brilliance of Moura in portraying the role.
This same can be said with Pena, who will take on a new mission as a new team takes on the Medellin Cartel. However, this will not stop creator Eric Newman from bringing Pascal back to some extent in "Narcos" season 3.
"We try to be as bound to what actually happened as we can—within reason, obviously. We do take some liberties for dramatic purposes," Newman told Entertainment Weekly.
"But I'd probably have to look at what Pena's role would be in the Cali, in taking down Cali. I love working with Pedro Pascal, so nothing would make me happier than to be back in business with him in some way," he continued.
With that said, Pena's screen time will likely be less in "Narcos" season 3 now that his job is over. The new season will focus on the takedown of Medellin with one of its leaders Gilberto RodrÃguez Orejuela (Damian Alcazar) stepping into the spotlight.
"Narcos" season 3 will premiere next year on Netflix.
