'Narcos' season 3 storyline development news: Upcoming season to focus on the Cali Cartel
Fans of the original Netflix series, "Narcos," would surely be glad to know that the drug cartel drama is renewed for two more seasons. However, after the death of Pablo Escobar (Wagner Moura), viewers are left to wonder what direction will the show take for the upcoming seasons.
Well, Escobar's death paved the way for the rise of the Cali Cartel. The Cali Cartel is led by Gilberto Rodriguez Orejuela alongside his brother Miguel Orejuela and Paulo Herrera. They took over the Medellin Cartel and smuggled their own cocaine products in Colombia. The Cali Cartel made it big, but it was eventually put down by the CIA and Jorge Salcedo.
The end of the Cali Cartel could also possibly pave the way for the introduction of Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman in the "Narcos" storyline. Showrunner Eric Newman isn't closing his door on the possibility of having the story of "El Chapo" in the show.
When The Hollywood Reporter asked about how many seasons does he think would it take for the show to catch up to "El Chapo," Newman said that it depends on where they start in the Mexican timeline.
"Chapo was there at the beginning, in a way. He was one of the younger guys in the Guadalajara cartel before it splintered and he and another guy were given Sinaloa as territory. In our timeline currently, that's already happened because that was in 1985. So it depends. If we take our time, it could take a while. If we jump right into it, it could be really soon," he said.
"Narcos" season 2 is likely to premiere in August or September 2017. It is also reported that Boyd Holbrook is returning for season 2 as Steve Murphy. It can be recalled that Murphy went back to the United States after Escobar died in the first season. Murphy had served Escobar in the Columbian drug trade.
It is rumored that Holbrook will reprise his role in "Narcos" season 2 but will not be there until the end due to his commitment to the upcoming sci-fi film "The Predator." The showrunners have yet to comment on this rumor.
