'Nashville' season 5 spoilers: New season in new home promises same storylines with more emotional punch
"Nashville" returned last Thursday with a new season, in a brand new home, and with the same level of drama that the show's avid fans have come to love.
After it was cancelled by ABC on its fourth season, the musical drama series was picked up by a new network, CMT. With the first half of it fifth season airing three weeks ahead of episode 2, fans' excitement for the show will definitely be building up over the holiday season.
"Nashville's" first sneak peek episode at its new home came back with a lot of the answers to the questions that were left hanging after the fourth season's shocking finale, while also quite effectively raising more questions to cover season 5's rather chaotic, though compelling storyline. The Boot called it "as crazy a time as ever" for "Nashville's" beloved characters.
It will definitely be the same show when it returns next year for the second part of its premiere episode. But with a new home, new showrunners, new faces, and a few of the old timers refusing to return, the resurrected "Nashville" may have a slightly different flavor to it.
In an interview with TV Guide, new co-showrunner Marshall Herskovitz expressed his concern regarding the general pacing of the show. He said that the accelerated storytelling that "Nashville" utilized in ABC was something he was not familiar with, and that he would much rather slow the storytelling down to let each powerful storyline resonate with the viewers on a more emotional level. The showrunners, along with the writers, will be letting the different stories within "Nashville" to play themselves out.
With a slower pace, there will be no more than two or three main stories in each episode with longer scenes that "go deeper into what each story is about." They hoped to make "Nashville" the kind of show that is based on the emotions more than the adrenaline factor of each scene.
There will also be more music, more diversity and less sappiness. Series protagonist, Juliette Barnes (Hayden Panettiere) will also be a changed person coming out of a plane crash.
"Nashville" season 5 returns with the full two-hour premiere on Thursday, Jan. 5, on CMT. Here is the full-season trailer for the new season.
