'NCIS: Los Angeles' season 8 news: Shane Brennan out, R. Scott Gemmill in as new showrunner
Shane Brennan will be leaving his rank as the showrunner of "NCIS: Los Angeles" and it will be fellow TV production expert R. Scott Gemmill who will be taking his place. However, Brennan will be remaining as executive producer of the police procedural show.
Brennan, who has been the showrunner for "NCIS: Los Angeles" in all of its seven seasons, will have to step down from his job as new projects have cropped up for him to develop and focus on. He has just signed a new two-year overall contract between the CBS TV Studios and his own Shane Brennan Productions.
One of the new projects he will be working on with CBS will be the small screen adaptation of the movie "The Expendables." Brennan will also be kept occupied with the TV adaptation of Ian McDonald's novel, "Luna: New Moon," for which he will be partnering with Grant Anderson, the president of Shane Brennan Productions. Brennan and CBS TV studios have acquired exclusive rights to the first book in the science fiction series by McDonald.
On the other hand, Gemmill, who has served as co-executive producer of "NCIS: Los Angeles" since the debut of the military spin-off drama back in 2009, is a TV production veteran with an excellently proven track record under his belt. Gemmill used to be a writer and producer of "JAG," which was also a US Navy-themed drama and which actually spawned the original "NCIS" installment. He then took on similar jobs for other popular TV shows such as "ER," "The Unit" and "Hawaii Five-0," among others. Moreover, apart from having been a producer for "NCIS: Los Angeles," Gemmill has also penned more than 30 of its episodes.
The eight season of "NCIS: Los Angeles" will most likely premiere on CBS this coming September.
