NES Classic Edition news, updates: ThinkGeek has a creative way to distribute limited units of the NES Classic

Who would have thought that the Nintendo NES Classic Edition will outsell the Wii U? The figures aren't even close. The NES Classic was simply one of the hottest gifts for the holidays, but supplies didn't last. Perhaps Nintendo didn't expect it to tug at the nostalgic heartstrings of the '80s and '90s kids out there when they released a very limited number of units before the holiday season. The people who bought those units probably still remember the Konami Code.

A lot of people didn't get a unit last month, but retailer ThinkGeek has recently announced that they have received a supply of the NES Classic. But before everyone rushes to the local stores, it should be noted that they aren't exactly selling it to just about anyone who asks for it. There's actually a lottery involved.

To win the right to buy a unit, interested buyers will have to enter their name and email address on this link. Afterward, ThinkGeek will select the lucky buyers randomly and they will be given further instructions on how to purchase their units.

Interested buyers have until Jan. 23, 8 a.m. ET to enter their name, so hurry up. Winners will have to remember that the code they are given will only be good for 24 hours. If the code isn't used within 24 hours, other buyers will get another chance to win it instead. The NES Classic is selling lot hotcakes right now, so don't miss the chance to get a unit.

Well, that's actually a very creative way to distribute the limited units they have. Many will have to wait for the next shipment, but at least they don't have to get into fights for a console. People who can't wait can also check out the ones sold by scalpers. The problem is, those units are going to be priced many times higher than the $59.99 suggested retail price.
