The most recent season of "New Girl" witnessed the marriage of Cece (Hannah Simone) and Schmidt (Max Greenfield) as well as the surprising breakup between Jess (Zooey Deschanel) and Sam (David Walton). This split between Jess and Sam ignited excitement and lit hope for fans who wish to see a reconciliation taking place between Jess and Nick (Jake Johnson).

"New Girl" creator and executive producer Liz Meriwether refers to the relationship between Jess and Nick as "the heart of the show." In the event that the storyline finally takes the track headed back to revisit the Jess and Nick romance, it will have to be in such a way that it will be genuine and comfortable, and will feel good for the show. The events to unfold should first allow for each of the characters to have their stories. They have to be able to grow and be more mature in order for them to be prepared enough to be in a relationship. This same idea will have to apply to the relationship between Jess and Nick.

In an interview with The Entertainment Weekly, Meriwether spoke of the potential reunion between Jess and Nick, which should require both of the characters to "grow a lot and change."

"The door is definitely not shut," said Meriwhether.

It was pivotal for Jess to get to the realization that she still has feelings for her former beau. It will be a new dynamic then to explore in the upcoming sixth season of the comedy TV show. This time it will be Jess who will be longing for Nick. This will shift the balance from the time back in the second season when it was Nick who was yearning for Jess.

Meanwhile, Nick being in a relationship with Reagan (Megan Fox) is proof of how much he has grown as a person and a lover. He has gained self-confidence to date her.

To grow and make the necessary changes are what Jess and Nick will need if they will ever be back together. They have to be able to realize first where they went wrong in their previous relationship before they can go hand-in-hand in the right direction.

"The door is definitely open, and Jess is probably standing in the doorway," teased Meriwether about the possibilities between Jess and Nick in the season 6 of "New Girl."
