New Mexico's Governor Says 'Coward' Who Carried Out Church Blasts Will Be Caught

New Mexico's governor has denounced the "coward" who set off two church blasts over the weekend that shocked congregants as they headed to church services on Sunday morning.

The two blasts reportedly took place 20 minutes apart from each other in Las Cruces, New Mexico on Sunday morning at the Calvary Baptist and Holy Cross Roman Catholic churches, which are located only a few miles from each other.

Although the blasts resulted in no injuries, masses at the two churches were canceled for the rest of the day as authorities attempted to investigate the situation.

New Mexico Governor Susana Martinez said in a statement Sunday that authorities will do all they can to catch the culprit who carried out the alarming explosives.

"Only a coward would place an explosive device in a place of peace and a place of worship," Martinez said. "Whoever did this will feel full pressure of the law."

New Mexico State Police Chief Pete Kassetas added in a statement that although authorities are sure the explosives were detonated to inflict harm on churchgoers, New Mexico residents can be assured that justice will be served to the perpetrator.

"New Mexicans can have faith and confidence that law enforcement, federal and local, will tirelessly work until whoever is responsible is brought to justice," Kassetas said.

Las Cruces Police Spokesman Danny Trujillo added to the Associated Press that authorities are trying to determine if the explosions were connected or coincidental.

"It doesn't appear to be coincidental because of the timing, but you never know," Trujillo said.
