New 'Transformers' Movie Release Date Coming in 2017; Mark Wahlberg Eager to Return to Work
The next "Transformers" movie is expected to hit theaters in 2017, the studio behind the franchise revealed.
During an earnings conference call on April 20, Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner confirmed that the studio has assigned Akiva Goldsman to lead a group of writers in drafting the plot for the sequel to 2014's "Transformers: Age of Extinction."
That movie grossed over a billion dollars worldwide, broke box-office records in China and became the biggest film opening in China.
Goldsman, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of "A Beautiful Mind," was engaged to develop a wider universe for the blockbuster franchise, like what Disney is doing with "Star Wars," with the objective of developing spin-offs that can keep the franchise fresh and the money rolling in.
Paramount initially targeted 2016 for the next "Transformers" film release. However, Michael Bay is still preparing to direct "13 Hours," a movie based on the 2012 terrorist attacks on the US diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya, starring John Krasinski.
Meanwhile, Mark Wahlberg, who joined the franchise in the fourth installment, "Transformers: Age of Extinction," has signed on for additional sequels and has expressed an eagerness to get back to work. He told MTV that he has a feeling he will be on the set soon.
