New York Official: Terrorist Situation Complicated Ahead Of Sept. 11 Anniversary
As New York City approaches the anniversary of the tragic 2001 terrorist attacks on September 11, terror specialists in the state have warned that the current situation with the Islamic State is more complex than ever.
"It is layer upon layer upon layer — not all coming from the same place or ideology," John Miller, the New York Police Department's deputy commissioner of intelligence and counterterrorism, told the Associated Press in a recent interview regarding the current Islamic State threat.
Miller went on to say that the Islamic State's knowledge of Twitter and other social media platforms that results in the "mass marketing of terrorism" and a wider promotion of "al-Qaida-ism."
"When you look at the level of sophistication, the amount of slickness applied to their video production, the amount of thought that goes into creating a narrative," Miller said, "They're doing the same kind of thing as we've seen in commercial publishing or in the ad industry."
President Barack Obama is expected to address the current Islamic State threat with the American public on Wednesday. The president reportedly met with top officials in Congress on Tuesday evening to promote his strategy for destroying the terrorist organization that many are saying could be effective for multiple years.
Since June, the Islamic State has been gaining strength in Iraq and Syria. The group caused international outrage with it filmed the beheading of two American journalists and threatened to behead a third captive from Great Britain.
