'No Man's Sky' game update, news: Foundation Update lets players set up camps, build bases

After a rough time since its opening, developer Hello Games is still trying to revive the reputation of the game "No Man's Sky" by releasing the Foundation Update that lets players build bases and camps.

Last week, Hello Games announced the Foundation Update that added several new contents to the game. In a statement, Hello Games said, "We're calling it The Foundation Update, because we have added the foundations of base building, and also because this is putting in place a foundation for things to come."

The detailed patch notes of Foundation Update followed shortly after the announcement. For starters, Hello Games introduced several game modes with various sets of rules while still being able to explore the universe. The update will practically let players build their very own station by claiming an inhabited planet or base.

Foundation Update also includes activities such as farming, making a camp, acquiring freighters, discovering new resources and technology.

In the new features, gamers can hire a non-playable character (NPC) to assist them. For example, in farming, players can hire a farming specialist who will take care of the research and planting of up to 10 new plant types that can later on lead to new resource elements. Players can cultivate their plants outdoors or inside of either their Freighter or base.

Freighters can now be bought and subsequently customized with the Foundation Update. Hello Games explained, "Purchase huge interstellar Freighters at great expense, and then summon them from anywhere in the galaxy. Resources can be teleported to your Freighter while on-planet, ideal for stockpiling goods for trading."

Aside from farming specialists, players can also start hiring Engineer, Weapons and Science specialists to assist in developing new resources and technologies.

Aside from addition of new contents, the Foundation Update has also brought tweaks to improve or fix some elements of the game. For example, the user interface was enhanced "to accommodate the stress of Survival Mode where a small inconvenience can be the difference between life and death."

Though Foundation Update offers major additional contents, Hello Games clarified that, "Foundation Update] won't be our biggest update, but it is the start of something."
