U.S. President Barack Obama spoke out regarding 2016 presidential hopeful Donald Trump in a recent interview, suggesting the real estate mogul-turned-politician is a "great publicity seeker."

In a recent interview with "60 Minutes," the president said that although Trump is currently high in the ratings, he doesn't believe the brash television personality will actually become president.

"Well, I think that he is a great publicity-seeker and at a time when the Republican party hasn't really figured out what it's for, as opposed to what it's against. I think that he is tapped into something that exists in the Republican party that's real," the president said on the program that aired Sunday evening.

"I think there is genuine anti-immigrant sentiment in the large portion of at least Republican primary voters. I don't think it's uniform. He knows how to get attention. He is, you know, the classic reality TV character and, at this early stage, it's not surprising that he's gotten a lot of attention," he added.

While the president did not directly comment on Trump's viability for winning the presidency, he did say he doesn't believe the real estate mogul will actually become the next president.

"You know, I'll leave it up to the pundits to make that determination. I don't think he'll end up being president of the United States," Obama said.

Trump responded to the president's interview in a Monday morning comment to Fox News, saying: "Well, I watched his performance last night and I thought it was terrible. I thought it was sad because everything's negative. It's nothing positive."
