U.S. President Barack Obama has slammed the GOP for refusing to accept Syrian refugees into the U.S. following the Paris terror attacks, saying that such an approach to the refugee crisis is "offensive."

The president argued in a statement this week that some members of the GOP are in fear of "widows and orphans" attempting to escape the dangers of the Middle East and find refuge in the U.S.

"We are not well served when, in response to a terrorist attack, we descend into fear and panic," Obama said in a statement, as reported by CNN. "We don't make good decisions if it's based on hysteria or an exaggeration of risks."

"Apparently they are scared of widows and orphans coming into the United States of America," the president added. "At first, they were too scared of the press being too tough on them in the debates. Now they are scared of 3-year-old orphans. That doesn't seem so tough to me."

Obama's comments come after several Republican governors announced that they would be halting refugee acceptance into their states following the Paris terror attacks that killed 129 and were allegedly carried out by Islamic State militants.

House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wisconsin) said in a statement this week that Congressional Republicans have formed a task force angled at halting legislation that would bring more Syrian refugees into the United States.

"Our task force is considering legislation while we speak. We're meeting every day and we will bring legislation forward," Ryan told reporters this week.
