'Ocean's Eight' rumors, spoilers, news: spin-off plot revealed; Matt Damon to cameo
The "Ocean's Eleven" spin-off material, "Ocean's Eight," has already made its much-needed boost in the media with its controversial all-female casting, just in time when gender pay gap has catapulted Hollywood into a frenzy recently. And with that blitz and sound bite, the film is still en route for more.
The next bite didn't shy away from revealing itself as the plot for "Ocean's Eight" has now made the rounds in various rumor mills. SlashFilm has revealed that Sandra Bullock, who leads the all-female cast, is set to play Danny Ocean's (George Clooney) ex-con sister. Bullock will also be leading the group.
Meanwhile, "Blue Jasmine" actress Cate Blanchett will be taking the role of Bullock's second-in-command comrade, akin to Brad Pitt's Rusty Ryan. As such, the plot is reportedly going to take place in New York in which a group of highly skilled thieves is set to conduct a massive heist — to acquire a necklace, no less, against a crooked gallery owner at the Met Ball.
In related news, "Ocean's Eleven" original cast member Matt Damon is confirmed to make a cameo in the upcoming installment. He may still take his role as Linus Caldwell. Damon has shared that he has not read the script yet. In addition, Collider has revealed that with Damon's presence in the female-centric spin-off, there might be a "narrative connection" between the two franchises after all.
"Ocean's Eight" will be helmed by "Hunger Games" director Gary Ross. The new ensemble is top billed by Bullock, Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter, Sarah Paulson, Mindy Kaling, Awkwafina and Rihanna.
Ross has co-written the screenplay with Olivia Milch and has reportedly tapped Eigil Bryld of "In Bruges'" fame for a collaboration on the film's photography.
"Ocean's Eight" is set for a summer release in 2018.
