A former substitute teacher in Ohio has been sentenced to 90 days in jail for allegedly showing a graphic video to students that included sex scenes and violence.

Substitute teacher Sheila Kearns was found guilty of four felony counts by a jury after showing the movie "The ABC's of Death" to her Spanish class at Columbus' East High School in April 2013.

Kearns claimed that she was unaware that he movie would include graphic sex scenes and violence inappropriate for children of high school age, but the jury determined that Kearns should have assumed by the title of the movie that it was not well-suited for teenagers.

Additionally, the jury determined that although it may have been more excusable for Kearns to realize her mistake after showing the movie once, the 58-year-old teacher continued to show the movie four times to each of her Spanish classes.

The ruling included reprimanding from Franklin County Judge Charles A. Schneider, who argued that Columbus City Schools should not have put a substitute teacher in a Spanish class when she couldn't even speak the language.

"This is what happens when you put a teacher in a class that she cannot teach," Common Pleas Judge Schneider said before Kearns was sentenced to 90 days in jail.

"They put a permanent substitute in a high-school Spanish class who can't speak Spanish at all. Here we are, with the Columbus public schools telling us what wonderful things (they) are doing," he added.
