'Orange Is the New Black' season 5 news, spoilers: Star teases 'war' in new season; Soso deals with Poussey's death
Poussey's (Samira Wiley) death in the "Orange Is the New Black" season 4 finale devastated her friends at Litchfield Penitentiary, but it also incited them into action against the abusive prison guards.
In the season's final moments, Daya (Dascha Polanco) pulled out a gun and pointed it at one of the guards, leaving viewers to wonder where the show will go from there.
According to "Orange Is the New Black" actress Danielle Brooks, who plays Taystee, fans will find the inmates and the prison guards at "war" when the show's fifth season drops next year.
"It's war," Brooks told The Hollywood Reporter. "Taystee has nothing to lose, she's lost everything that she cared so deeply about. It's time to fight. I think — I don't know! — but I think that's where we will see Taystee go."
During the season 4 finale, Taystee's anguish over having discovered Poussey's dead body made an already-tragic episode all the more heart-wrenching.
In the episode, Poussey was accidentally suffocated and killed during a prison riot when Bayley (Alan Aisenberg), a prison guard, restrained her by holding her down with a knee on her back. To make things worse, Poussey's lifeless body was left for almost an entire day on the cafeteria floor as the prison tried to figure out what to tell the public.
Poussey's senseless death paralleled those — including Eric Garner's and Sandra Bland's — that ignited the Black Lives Matter movement.
Speaking with THR, Brooks said that Poussey's death serves to bring attention to the many victims of social injustice and police brutality and that she hopes that people will be as invested in real lives as they are in those of the characters on the show.
Meanwhile, "OITNB" actress Kimiko Glenn, who plays Poussey's girlfriend Soso, recently talked about what life will be like for Soso in the aftermath of Poussey's death.
"I imagine she's going to have a really tough time with it," the actress told THR. "She's had such a tough go of it in general and she finally found someone she could really talk to."
According to the actress, Soso's grief will be compounded by the fact that she is trapped in prison with no family to support her in her time of need.
"I can't imagine she's going to have an easy time dealing with it from here on out," Glenn said.
"Orange Is the New Black" season 4 is now streaming on Netflix.
