'Orange is the New Black' season 5 spoilers, news: Laverne Cox spills new details about upcoming season; story to address major cliffhanger in season 4
"Orange is the New Black" premieres this spring, and cast member Laverne Cox recently spilled new details about the upcoming season of Netflix's gripping prison drama.
Cox, who plays Sophia Burset in the show, spoke with People magazine and shared some teasers about the fifth season. Although she kept her statements mostly vague, she seemed very excited about what happens next after the major cliffhanger in season 4.
"It is really juicy and really amazing," she said. "If you're a fan, and I'm a fan of the show even as a person who is on it, when I got the script I felt like I was tearing into it. When actually, it was on my iPad [and I was] scrolling down like, 'What happens?' because it was a cliffhanger at the end of season 4," the actress went on to say.
The 32-year-old went on to reveal that the plot will take place in just three days. "Next season happens in three days, all 13 episodes happen in a three-day period," Cox continued. "So we are jamming a lot in. A lot happens in that period of three days," she added.
The previous season left off with the tragic death of Litchfield Prison inmate Poussey Washington (Samira Wiley). She died after a prison riot, and the officials wanted to cover it up. The inmates got in another confrontation with the guards, and Dayanara (Dascha Polanco) ends up holding a gun on one officer. The finale wrapped up without revealing if Daya pulled the trigger or not.
According to reports, star Laura Prepon will be directing an episode. The actress, who also plays Piper's (Taylor Schilling) on-again-off-again girlfriend Alex, helmed episode 10 of season 5. Aside from the main characters, Lolly (Lori Petty) is also expected to return for the new season. Her fate at Litchfield was left ambiguous after she was dragged off to the psych ward towards the end of season 4, but it is believed that her story won't end there.
The fifth season of "Orange is the New Black" premieres Friday, June 9, on Netflix.
