'Outlander' season 2 finale spoilers: Two new main characters debut
The adult versions of two characters will be making their first appearance in the upcoming "Outlander" season 2 finale. So much secrecy has surrounded these two that anticipation for their debut has been remarkable. Now, one year after the actors for this pair were cast, fans will finally get to see them. The significance of this introduction hopefully is not lost on the show's viewers, especially the fans of Diana Gabaldon's novels, from which the show is based.
Brianna Randall (Sophie Skelton) and Roger Wakefield (Richard Rankin) are almost as important to the "Outlander" saga as Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire (Caitriona Balfe). Younger versions of the characters have previously appeared on the show, but the season 2 finale will mark the initial glimpse of the more mature images of the duo by the audience.
A first look at Randall and Wakefield was shared on Twitter by Entertainment Weekly from "Outlander's" highly anticipated episode, "Dragonfly in Amber." The two are pictured in what appears to be their early twenties with book-lined shelves and a fireplace lit behind them, standing in a room which seems to be a study or a library.
"There is so much anticipation for these characters," according to Rankin, in reference to the characters' initiation.
Randall is Jamie and Claire's daughter who was raised by the latter's first husband, Frank. Wakefield is Randall's future romantic interest.
Rankin said that it is important to him and Skelton that the audience like what they see of the long-awaited characters. The latter is expecting there will be some repercussion after her character makes an appearance. Avid readers of the book version may be disconcerted to find that Randall's TV version will neither have blue eyes nor her Boston accent.
Reports have it that, with the way the first two seasons have gone, the third one may be embarking on the next title in the novel series, "Voyager," where the characters of Randall and Wakefield will be figuring quite notably. It is expected then that season 3 will see more and more of the couple. Randall and Wakefield finally coming out on the show will see the increasing importance of these characters as the series goes on.
The "Outlander" season 2 finale is expected to air July 9 on Starz.
