'Outlander' season 3 spoilers: Lord John Grey's solo stories might find way into series
"Outlander" season 3 will introduce more characters and versions of old ones as it continues to bring to life Diana Gabaldon's bestselling novels.
One of the characters set to be featured in the new season is the older version of Lord John Grey. The young version has already popped up on the show played by Oscar Kennedy.
Since a 20-year time jump will be in effect in "Outlander" season 3, Grey will be portrayed by an actor in the suitable age and the show is currently looking for the person to bring him to life.
Grey had a bigger role in "Voyager," the third book in Gabaldon's bestselling saga that the next season will be based on. His presence was prominent when Jamie (Sam Heughan) was held in Ardsmuir Prison, where he is governor.
When Jamie first met Grey, he was a teenager who was trying to get him in trouble. In "Outlander" season 3, the inmate will strike a friendship (albeit an unlikely one) with Grey, who was revealed to be a closeted gay man, developing romantic feelings for him.
Grey as a character is very popular in the literary world, so much that he is protagonist in a series of books as well. One book about him was set in the same timeline as "Voyager."
However, "Outlander" season 3 will stick with Gabaldon's third book so hardcore fans of the character should only expect his exposure to be in line with that in the book.
"John Grey is in the third book, so we're kind of taking our cues from what is actually in the third book at this point," executive producer Ronald D. Moore told TVLine.
However, he did suggest that Grey's stories could be intertwined in "Outlander" in the future. "We're not averse to it. We just aren't really bringing in the other novels at this point," he added.
"Outlander" season 3 will premiere next year on Starz.
