'Pacific Rim 2' release date, update, news: Mackenyu Maeda joins cast; Charlie Hunnam not reprising role?
"Pacific Rim 2" is still a long way to go but that doesn't mean that fans are completely kept in the dark. Just recently, a new star has been revealed to join the cast of the upcoming sequel.
According to reports, Japanese-American actor Mackenyu Maeda is going to take part in the sci-fi movie, which is aptly titled "Pacific Rim: Maelstrom." He confirmed this news via his Twitter account wherein he said that he will be playing the role of a character named Ryoichi. He also wrote how happy he is to join the cast.
It's not revealed yet who Ryoichi is but more details are expected to emerge soon as the film's production progresses. The "Chihayafuru Part I" star will be joining other confirmed cast members including "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" actor John Boyega, who is noted to play the role of the son of Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba), and Scott Eastwood who is reportedly in Australia already for filming.
Newbie actress and pop singer Cailee Spaeny has also been revealed to play a part in the second installment. Fans are wondering though if Charlie Hunnam's Raleigh Becket will be making a comeback in the movie. Reports said that Hunnam is going to be very busy with two new movies but unfortunately, these do not include "Pacific Rim 2."
Hunnam revealed that he will be part of the "Papillon" remake film wherein he will work alongside co-star Rami Malek of "Mr. Robot." Aside from that, Hunnam will also have a role in upcoming sci-fi flick "Zoe" starring Lea Seydoux. With a schedule so full, it may be impossible now for the "Sons of Anarchy" star to take part in the "Pacific Rim" sequel.
"Pacific Rim: Maelstrom" is expected to premiere on Feb. 23, 2018, and it will be directed by Steven S. DeKnight. Fans will have to stay tuned for more updates on the film.
