Televangelist Pat Robertson stirred controversy last week when he said the recently deceased and beloved actor Robin Williams died due to his belief in a "heathen god."

Robertson made his comments on the Christian Broadcasting Network's "The 700 Club," saying that Williams, who suffered from severe depression and spent stints in rehab, failed to focus his life on God and therefore perished.

"You see these very popular people in the media who commit suicide like Robin Williams recently and you say, 'What is the deal with him? What happened?' You find people who are at the top of the game in music and they're strung out on drugs. What happened? What was their God?" Robertson said on his show, the flagship program of the Christian Broadcasting Network.

Robertson went on to say that "the god of the heathen are idols, and everything that you seek in life can ruin you unless that something and somebody is God himself. He can fill your every need, and He won't disappoint you and you won't want to commit suicide after you have come to him."

The televangelist and former Southern Baptist preacher has previously received criticism for comments he's made regarding homosexuality and abortion, among other hot button topics.

Williams died earlier in August at his home near San Francisco, California, where he allegedly committed suicide by hanging. The 63-year-old actor reportedly suffered from severe depression and the early onset of Parkinson's Disease, but his wife released a statement shortly after his suicide saying her husband had maintained his sobriety up until his death.
