Pedro Aguayo Ramirez Dead: Mexican Pro Wrestler Dies After Flying Kick From Rey Mysterio Jr.

Mexican professional wrestler Pedro Aguayo Ramirez, 35 died in the ring on Sunday after getting a flying kick on the upper body by Oscar Gutierrez, better known as Rey Mysterio Jr, a former WWE superstar.

The match took place in an auditorium in Tijuana, Mexico. Ramirez lay unconscious on the ropes for about two minutes before the match was stopped and medical attention was provided to him.

Ramirez, who performed under the name of "Hijo del Perro Aguayo," lay on the ropes as three other contenders in the professional wrestling match continued to fight. Commentators said the match went on as the other wrestlers thought Ramirez lying on the ropes was just part of the staged action.

A video of the match showed several people shaking up the unconscious Ramirez in an attempt to revive him. He was not provided immediate medical attention since the lone ring doctor was treating another injured wrestler, reports said.

The Tijuana Boxing and Wrestling Commission described the death of Aguayo as "unfortunate accident like those that occur in other high-risk sports."

The president of the commission Juan Carlos Pelayo claimed that immediate assistance was provided to Ramirez by a doctor from among the spectators.

However, in the video footage of the incident posted on YouTube, Ramirez could be seen sprawled on the ropes unresponsive as another wrestler tried to check on his condition. A man from the audience then approach and tried to shake him awake. This did not work and paramedics were called.

Ramirez was taken to a hospital but was pronounced dead at 1:30 a.m. local time.

Raul Gutierrez, a spokesman for the state prosecutor's office, said an autopsy revealed that the fighter suffered a cervical fracture following a kick to his neck. He said authorities have started investigating the case, which he said could be treated as manslaughter.

Ramirez was a famous figure in the colorful world of Mexican wrestling and was the son of legendary wrestler Pedro Aguayo who has retired. Ramirez had been wrestling for 20 years and had held several titles including some with his father. He even won the national heavyweight championship during his younger days.

The Crash, the company that sponsored the event, declined to release any statement about the incident.
