'Penny Dreadful' season 4 news: Fourth installment canceled; could spin-off series be possible?
It's official. "Penny Dreadful," which ended its third run in June, is not coming back for a fourth season. Creator John Logan weighed in on why a fourth installment is out of the question.
Fans who followed the series since its inception know how much it hinged on Vanessa's (Eva Green) role. However, the season 3 finale saw the character die, and with the end of the character's arc, the series would be teetering on rocky ground if it continues. Logan bared that much when he spoke to TV Line about series' end.
"I was planning a third season, I realized, 'Oh, I see exactly where this is heading. She's going to have that moment, and the only way she can truly have it is at the moment of her death,'" he said.
That was Logan pretty much declaring that he doesn't see himself tinkering with the idea of a fourth installment. With Vanessa Ives gone, there was no other way to go about it but bring closure to the story, which mostly revolved around the character. Apparently, David Nevins, Showtime's president, supported Logan's decision.
Nevertheless, he did tell Deadline that given the chance (in the future), he would like to revisit the series that debuted to high ratings back in 2014.
"I'll tell you if David Nevins comes to me in five years and says, 'Hey remember 'Penny Dreadful'? What are your thoughts?' I would happily engage the conversation," the EP told the publication.
Meanwhile, Yibada played on the possibility of a spinoff series considering there were some loose ends left hanging when season 3 ended.
It would be recalled that in the last few episodes of "Penny Dreadful" season 3, Vanessa seemed to be grooming Catriona (Perdita Weeks) as her successor. Moreover, Mr. Lyle (Simon Russell Beale), the group's expert when it comes to ancient texts and relics, journeyed off to Egypt in the finale, and that could prove to be a good storyline should a spinoff series be created.
Will there be a "Penny Dreadful" spin-off series now that the fourth season has been scrapped off the drawing board? Would Netflix pick up the spinoff? Keep coming back for more updates on "Penny Dreadful."
