'Penny Dreadful' season 4 news 2016: Netflix considering revival or spin-off series?
Fans of "Penny Dreadful" are clamoring for a fourth season, as they feel the series ended abruptly. However, its creator said the show has reached its destination, and unless another network picks it up, it would remain a part of Showtime's history.
When "Penny Dreadful" ended its third season in June, the fate of the series hung in the balance. Creator John Logan said there was never any intention to push through with a new installment beyond season 3. With Vanessa Ives (Eva Green) dead, there was no way to go but bring the tale to a close, and according to Logan, he realized that when he was planning the third season.
With a fourth season out of the question, fans of the series went as far as raising an online petition, which they called "Netflix: Save 'Penny Dreadful'" on Change.org. They are hoping the love and support they are showing the series won't go unnoticed by Netflix, and that soon, the network would pick up the series or a potential spinoff.
"We ask Netflix to buy Penny Dreadful, because of its high quality, original plot and brilliant universe of characters, in order to save it and to produce one or more seasons of the show," it says on the petition page, which has 12,437 supporters as of this writing.
Fans were taken by surprise since there was no indication that the series would be canceled. The cast and crew, as well as Showtime, never dropped hints, which is why it came as a shock when the words "The End" were flashed onscreen at the end of the season 3 finale.
Meanwhile, the Irish Examiner recently reported that "Penny Dreadful" helped boost profits for Ardmore Studios where the Showtime drama was shot. Apparently, the studio suffered huge losses in 2011 and 2012 but recovered remarkably when it started doing the series in 2014.
The cancellation of the show hit the studio hard, but according to the publication, the report on "Penny Dreadful's" earnings could entice Netflix to pick it up for a spin-off series based on other characters in the story.
With no word coming from the producers of the series or from the networks involved concerning the fate of "Penny Dreadful," all fans can do for now is hope for the best. Stay tuned for more updates on the series in the coming days.
