"Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire," the sequel to Obsidian's critically acclaimed video game "Pillars of Eternity," is officially set for development, having reached the monetary goal of its Fig crowdfunding campaign in less than 24 hours after its launch.

As reported by Gamespot, it only took under 23 hours for the $1.1 million goal set by Obsidian to be reached. As of this writing, "Deadfire" has gathered over 12,000 backers and has more than $1.3 million in pledges. Funding has reportedly been split almost evenly between traditional crowdfunding and investments from people seeking equity in the project through Fig Game Shares.

"We have the best fans in the world. It is amazing how quickly they helped us reach the funding goal for Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire," said Obsidian Entertainment chief executive Feargus Urquhart, according to Gamespot. "Our fans were responsible for the original game's critical and financial success, and we are looking forward to doing it all over again with them for the sequel."

"For those who reserved Fig Games Shares, thank you for your trust in us and we look forward to having you share in the potential success of Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire together," he added.

The original "Pillars of Eternity" was also the result of a crowdfunding campaign in Kickstarter back in 2012. It initially had a goal of $1.1 million, but by the time the campaign finished, pledges amounted to nearly $4 million.

As with many other crowdfunded video games, "Pillars of Eternity" experienced multiple delays. However, by the time it was released, the video game was well-received by critics and fans alike.

"Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire" is an isometric, party-based role-playing video game that is slated for delivery in the first quarter of 2018 on Steam, GOG, Windows, Mac, and Linux systems. The crowdfunding for the planned "Pillars of Eternity" sequel runs until Feb. 24.
