PlayStation 4 Platinum 3D headset to hit store shelves in January

PlayStation 4 Platinum Wireless 3D Headset | Sony

Sony keeps on building its PlayStation arsenal, and tech enthusiasts are waiting for the impending release of the Platinum Wireless Headset, which is a complementary accessory to the company's premiere console.

In an announcement made by PlayStation on its official blog post, the premiere headset will be packing impressive specs including a 7.1 virtual surround sound that is made possible by Sony's very own 3D audio technology. This goes with noise-canceling microphones for clear communications. And despite being originally a part of the growing PlayStation 4 (PS4) bundle, it can also be used on other mobile devices with the help of the 3.5mm audio cable that it comes with.

For hardcore video gamers, the Platinum brings in some new technology for a more immersive experience. It "simulates the effect of audio arriving at your ears from different directions and distances to mimic the behavior of sound in real life," in a way that it is almost easy to forget that one is wearing them. The 3D sound also makes it a good companion to the Play Station Virtual Reality (PSVR) for players who wants to be riveted to their gameplays.

"At launch, Naughty Dog will be the first to incorporate 3D audio into a game with a patch for Uncharted 4: A Thief's End. A variety of upcoming games will support 3D audio including MLB The Show 17, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, and Days Gone with," an excerpt from Sony's statement reads.

Given that Naughty Dog was the first to get its hands on the headset, creative director Neil Druckmann offers his personal review of the upcoming device when he sampled it for "Uncharted 4." "With games, I think for a long time the picture has always been in the forefront of where you see the advances as we go from generation to generation," he shared. "But audio has been having these same leaps and bounds," he continued.

Originally scheduled for a holiday 2016 rollout, it was then later delayed to an early next year release, Platinum Wireless Headset is scheduled to hit the shelves on Jan. 12. It will cost $160 for North American buyers while Canadians can score a unit for $200 CAD.
