Police: Pennsylvania Ambush Suspect Role-Played As WWII Soldier

A massive manhunt is underway in rural eastern Pennsylvania for a 31-year-old suspect who recently ambushed and shot two state troopers outside of the Blooming Grove military barracks, killing one officer.

According to the Associated Press, hundreds of police officers scoured the rural eastern Pennsylvania area Wednesday in search of 31-year-old Eric Frein, who is suspected of shooting two troopers outside of their barracks on Friday night. One of the troopers, Cpl. Bryon Dickson, was killed by the ambush, while another, Trooper Alex Douglass, was critically wounded.

Wednesday marks the fifth day that police have been searching for Frein, who is reportedly a self-taught survivalist who has held a years-long grudge against law enforcement. Frein also reportedly participates in a role-playing group that reenacts the lives of soldiers from eastern Europe during World War II.

The Associated Press reports that on Wednesday, schools were closed and parents were encouraged to keep young children inside for fear of Frein.

Lt. Col. George Bivens said at a press conference Wednesday that although parents should be more protective of their children while Frein remains uncaptured, he is "convinced Frein is engaged in a personal battle with law enforcement, particularly the Pennsylvania State Police, and will likely stay focused on that fight."

During the press conference, Bivens spoke directly to Frein, saying: "In the event you are listening to this broadcast on a portable radio while cowering in some cold, damp hiding place, I want you to know one thing. Eric, we are coming for you. It is only a matter of time until we bring you to justice."
