'Preacher' season 2 release date: AMC renews series for an even bigger second season
AMC has given the green light to a second season of "Preacher," its popular new comic book adaptation starring Dominic Cooper.
The black comedy/supernatural horror drama is currently halfway through its first season run of 10 episodes. The new season will grow from 10 to 13 episodes when it returns sometime in 2017, Variety has learned.
"Preacher," which is based off the comic book series of the same title by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon, was developed for television by Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and Sam Catlin.
"'Preacher' is a special television program and we're eager to share with fans the rest of this wild first season and, now, an expanded second season," AMC president Charlie Collier said Wednesday, June 29, in a statement, as quoted by The Hollywood Reporter. "What Sam, Seth, Evan and the entire creative team have achieved in bringing Garth Ennis' graphic novel to the screen is extraordinary. We look forward to more time with these unforgettable characters be it in Heaven, Hell, Texas or beyond."
In the series, Cooper plays the role of Jesse Custer, a small-town preacher on a mission to find God. He is inhabited by a strange being called Genesis who gives him the power to make others do as he commands. This mysterious ability attracts two angels, Fiore (Tom Brooke) and DeBlanc (Anatol Yusef). The main characters also include Jesse's ex-girlfriend Tulip (Ruth Negga) and a vampire called Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun).
Before "Preacher" made its way to AMC in 2014, it was in development as a feature film for many years. The pilot episode was directed by Rogen and Goldberg, the two of whom are big fans of the source material.
But while the people behind the series are diehard comic book fans, the show's first season has seen much being added that was not in the original story. According to Collider, this could be a set-up for a "Preacher" season 2 that stays more faithful to the comic books.
"Preacher" airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
