Prince cause of death news update: Legendary artist died from accidental overdose; Fentanyl - 'heroin on steroids'

Speculations concerning the true reason for the legendary artist's death may now come to a rest after a medical examiner's office released an update on Prince's cause of death. Prince was found unresponsive in an elevator at Paisley Park, his home and recording studio, in Chanhassen, Minnesota.

It appears Prince, who is Prince Rogers Nelson in real life, overdosed on what federal health authorities claim is a powerful painkiller that poses public health threat. The L.A. Times says Dr. Cali Estes, an addiction specialist, refers to the Fentanyl as "heroin on steroids."

As of the moment, the 57-year-old artist's death on April 21 is still being investigated by the Carver Country Sheriff's Office. It has not commented on how Prince obtained the prescription painkiller, which the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) say is 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine. Apparently, it is used on patients dealing with chronic pain and as an anesthetic during a heart surgery.

As CNN reports, the toxicology tests performed on Prince made clear that he died from an accidental overdose of the opioid Fentanyl. The tests were conducted by the Midwest Medical Examiner's Office, and they made the results public through a press release that they posted on their Twitter account. A snap from the Twitter post appears below.

Nevertheless, the report released by the office seemed rather obscure, having not specified how Prince took the drug and if the Fentanyl was prescribed to him or illegally made. The report merely said Prince "self-administered Fentanyl" and that the manner of death was accidental.

Huffington Post tried to get in touch with Prince's rep for a confirmation and more details after they were informed by the medical examiner's office that they have yet to release the official results of the test, saying, "We have no new information."
