PS4 Pro release date, latest news & update: Polaris GPU's Delta Color Compression feature makes PlayStation debut in PS4 Pro
Since news of the upcoming Sony PlayStation 4 Pro broke, gamers have been eager to learn more about what it can do and how it is better than the standard PS4.
While Sony has already shared some of the PS4 Pro specs, PS4 Pro chief architect Mark Cerny recently revealed more details about the upcoming video game console, including the Polaris feature that makes its PlayStation debut in the PS4 Pro.
At the PlayStation Meeting last month, Cerny talked about how Sony boosted the PS4 Pro's GPU to accommodate ultra HD rendering. According to Cerny, the PS4 Pro boasts none other than AMD's Polaris GPU architecture. Delta Color Compression, a feature of AMD's Polaris, enables the PS4 Pro to make more efficient use of memory bandwidth, thus increasing the console's speed — a feature developers will find very useful.
"Polaris is a very energy efficient GPU architecture that lets us boost the GPU power pretty dramatically, while keeping the console form-factor roughly the same," Cerny said. "DCC — which is short for delta color compression — is a roadmap feature that's been improved for Polaris. It's making its PlayStation debut in PS4 Pro," he continued.
"DCC allows for inflight compression of the data heading towards frame buffers and render targets which results in a reduction in the bandwidth used to access them," Cerny added. "Since our GPU power has increased more than our bandwidth, this has the potential to be extremely helpful," he said.
Sony recently announced that the long-rumored PS4 Pro is arriving in November. While it is not an entirely new console, it is said to offer more effects, better textures, better framerates, and overall better visual output than the PS4. It plays the same games and uses the same store as the PS4 but has some bonuses, including 4K support and more RAM.
According to GamesRadar, the PS4 Pro box contains the console, a USB cable and an HDMI cable, an in-ear mono headset, a new DualShock controller, and an AC power cord. As of now, no other retail bundles are on offer apart from the basic one.
The PS4 Pro will be out on Nov. 10. It will cost $399 in the U.S.
