Report: Gunman Shoots Self After Killing 2 Va. News Station Employees
Media outlets are reporting that the suspect behind the fatal shooting of two Virginia news station employees reportedly shot himself while engaged in a police pursuit.
The suspect, identified as Vester Lee Flanagan, reportedly shot himself while being chased by authorities on Interstate 66, according to CNN. It remains unclear if Flanagan, who went by the professional name Bryce Williams, was killed or injured in the shooting.
Authorities are saying Flanagan is responsible for the Wednesday morning shooting of on-air journalist Alison Parker and cameraman Adam Ward. The two were shot while filming a segment at a local shopping mall.
Flanagan has been identified as a former disgruntled employee of the local WDBJ media station.
"This kind of loss will resonate in these halls for a long, long time as we remember in their short lives what dedicated journalism they produced and what outstanding journalists they were," Station manager Jeffrey Marks said in a statement.
Marks also recalled the video of the incident, which was shot both by Ward's camera and by a camera allegedly belonging to the shooter.
"We heard screaming, and then we heard nothing, and the camera fell," Marks said. "We are choosing not to run the video of that right now because, frankly, we don't need to see it again, and our staff doesn't need to see it again."
"How can this individual have robbed these families, the families of Alison and Adam, of their lives and their happiness and their love, for whatever reason?" Marks added.
