Anonymous U.S. officials are reporting that some of the missiles fired from Russian war ships in the Caspian Sea reportedly landed in Iran, not reaching their targets in Syria.

The report of the four misfired missiles comes as Russian authorities argue that all 26 of their missiles fired this week hit their targets in Syria.

Russia continues to receive scrutiny for its participation in the Syrian conflict. Although Russia claims to be targeting Islamic State strongholds during its airstrike missions, the U.S. has argued that the European country may in fact be targeting the opposition to Syria President Bashar al-Assad, with whom Russia is an ally.

Moscow denounced a recent report from CNN that suggested four missiles had mistakenly landed in Iran, with the Russia Defense Ministry writing on Facebook: "Unlike CNN, we don't report quoting anonymous sources, but we show launches of our missiles and the targets they hit in real-time mode."

"No matter how unpleasant and unexpected it is for our colleagues in the Pentagon and Langley, our strike yesterday with precision-guided weapons at ISIS infrastructure in Syria hit its targets," The statement added.

In light of Russia's recent participation in the Syria crisis, Nato chief Jens Stoltenberg said Russia's participation is "unhelpful".

NATO also reiterated its loyalty to its allies, saying in a statement: "All of this sends a clear message to all Nato citizens. Nato will defend you, Nato is on the ground, Nato is ready."
