"The Resident Evil" franchise has enjoyed a lot of attention the past few days, with the release of its seventh main video game and with "Resident Evil: The Final Chapter," the sixth and final movie adaptation of the franchise, arriving in theaters.

With the latest game enjoying strong launch sales, the "Resident Evil" movie franchise is also set to celebrate a huge milestone for the whole franchise and for all game-to-movie adaptations. "Resident Evil" has crossed the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office with the launch of "Resident Evil: The Final Chapter," becoming the first ever video game film adaptation to achieve such a feat.

In the film's official Instagram account, the people behind the commercially successful film franchise thanked the fans by posting a video informing the online community that the "Resident Evil" film franchise has crossed the $1 billion dollar mark.

Despite the historical milestone achieved by the "Resident Evil" film franchise, its achievement is overshadowed by a disappointing opening weekend in the United States. As reported by Attack of the Fanboy, preliminary numbers have shown that "Resident Evil: The Final Chapter" has grossed only $13.8 million over the first three days since it premiered in the country, making it the worst opening in the series.

Nevertheless, once the small figure is added to overseas gross over the weekend, amounting to $28.3 million, and the $35 million it grossed in Japan where it opened at No. 1 last December, the total amount is enough to push the entire "Resident Evil" franchise past the billion mark.

Despite its less-than-stellar performance in the United States, "Resident Evil: The Final Chapter" has the highest critical scores in the series' history. The film is currently rated as 41% fresh by Rotten Tomatoes while it has a score of 54 on Metacritic, significantly better compared to the other films in the franchise which were panned by most critics.

"Resident Evil: The Final Chapter" is still currently in theaters.
