Samsung Galaxy S6 Release Date, Specs Rumors: Vodafone Leak Confirms An Edge Variant
A major rumor that had been hinted at for months about Samsung's plan to release an Edge version of the S6 gained credibility this week. This developed when Vodafone in the Netherlands inadvertently released a page indicating that the "Samsung Galaxy S Edge" was coming.
Rumors also pointed at Samsung using the Galaxy S6 to change the direction of its flagship smartphone lineup when it releases the device in March during the MWC 2015. Rumors also indicated that the launch could happen on March 2.
Moreover, carrier networks appeared to be gearing up to offer the device. Vodafone Netherlands even provided the device with its own page and placeholder image.
According to another rumor, the phone would be launched in two versions – a standard and an Edge version with dual flexible edges.
Most analysts now presume that the phone will not be released with the new Snapdragon 810.
Last week, Samsung dropped the Snapdragon 810 due to overheating concerns. Experts now suggest that most Galaxy S6 devices will have the 64-bit Exynos 7420 SoC. However, some of the devices will be released with the 64-bit Snapdragon 810 chipset that Qualcomm is specifically creating for Samsung. The chipset is due for release by March.
Other rumors around the S6 hinted that Samsung could provide three special cases for the phone along the lines of the E-ink version, which adds a secondary screen for easy reading. Other cases, meanwhile, will be able to integrate with fitness equipment. As for its TouchWiz user interface, the Galaxy will be scaled down considerably and therefore will allow for a better Android 5.0 Lollipop experience.
Other rumors said the device would have 3 GB of RAM and come in three internal storage versions – the 32 GB, 64 GB and128 GB, all with a memory card slot.
There were also indications of a major camera upgrade – a 20 megapixel version with optical image stabilization.
