In the realm of smartwatches, the Samsung Gear S and the LG G Watch R stand out although they do not look alike in terms of design. Both have a number of great features which can make choosing between them tough.

Design

The G Watch R has a steel casing, detachable leather strap and is IP-67 certified. In addition, it can be submerged in up to one meter of water for 30 minutes – a quality it shares with the Gear S which is also IP-67 certified. However, the Gear S has a body crafted from plastic and it comes permanently attached to its strap.

Display

The Gear S has a rectangular watch face compared to the round version of the G Watch R. The Samsung smartwatch also has a curved Super AMOLED screen measuring 2 inches with a resolution of 360 x 480 pixels and a density of 300 pixels per inch. Compared to this, the G Watch R has a 1.3-inch round P-OLED display with a resolution of 320 x 320 pixels and a density of 246 pixels per inch.

Platform

The G Watch R and the Gear S have dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 chipsets clocked at 1GHz coupled with 512MB of RAM. As for their operating systems, the G Watch R comes with Android Wear while the Gear S comes with Tizen wearable operating system. Again both the G Watch R and the Gear S have 4GB of ROM.

Battery

The G Watch R has a 410mAh Li-Ion battery that can last for 48 hours with the always on feature switched off. But in case of heavy usage it has to be recharged every 24 hours. As for the Gear S, it has a 300mAh battery that can be used for about 24 hours without recharging.

Sensors

Both devices have a compass, accelerometer, gyro, heart rate sensor and barometer but the Gear S also has a UV light sensor and a proximity sensor.
