Samsung Gear VR Release Date Latest News, Features Rumors: Essentially In 'Beta Form'

The Samsung Gear VR is finally available after being released early this month. However, the device is essentially still in its "beta" form, also called the "Innovator Edition," which means that it is not yet in its prime. This virtual reality headset is already up for purchase for only $199 at AT&T.

Manufactured in partnership with Oculus, it is equipped with a tracking sensor and lenses that allow users to create 3D effects.

The Oculus official blog post confirmed the availability of the gadget and clarified that it is just a "first step towards true consumer mobile VR."

"Though it's missing several key components for comfort and presence, we're working with Samsung to improve in every vertical including optics, distortion, heat, weight, ergonomics, tracking, and display tech. Ultimately, it's a long term effort that we're committed to getting right," it continued.

It is still unclear how much users can really get from the device. For one, they still need the Galaxy Note 4 as it acts as the power, sound and screen for the gadget. However, the Gear VR has the lenses to be able to create 3D effect, control the touchpad, focus knob, back button and volume controls. Some of the features mentioned include viewing photos and playing games.

The display is rather grainy compared to the usual tablets and TVs. While the apps available for download are free, they are limited.

Our verdict? Although it looks promising, potential buyers shouldn't set their expectations too high.
