The Samsung Gear VR utilizes the display of Galaxy Note 4 to provide a virtual reality experience. To sum it up, the Gear VR is Samsung's attempt to make it an Oculus Rift.

The Oculus Rift, on the other hand, doesn't need another gadget to be able to function. However, although you may already purchase the Oculus Rift second Developer's Kit version for $350, the final version won't be available until later this year.

The Oculus Rift DK2 utilizes a 5.7-inch display screen with a resolution of 960 x 1080ppi for both eyes while the Samsung Gear VR uses Galaxy Note 4's 5.7-inch Quad HD Super AMOLED display with 2560 x 1440ppi for both eyes, which means the latter offers better image quality.

According to Oculus, the Oculus Rift gives users a nominal 100 degree field view experience while Samsung Gear VR offers only 96 degrees. In layman's term, this means that you can look a little further with the Oculus Rift, giving you a more 3D-kind of experience.

Before buying, you need to understand that the Oculus Rift DK2 is not meant for the general public but only for developers. While Samsung has branded their Gear VR for general consumers, they still consider it as an "Innovator Edition," which is meant for early adopters and developers as well.
