San Antonio Spurs trade rumors: Spurs trying to sign Argentine star
Looking to remain relevant in the Western Conference, the San Antonio Spurs are rumored to be looking outside the talent pool of the United States for key players.
According to CBS Sports, the team is looking at Argentine star Nicolas Laprovittola as a possible new Spur in the coming season.
The Spurs were reportedly impressed with Laprovittola's performances in the recently-concluded Rio Olympics that they are trying to find a way to get him to Texas.
It is also revealed that the Spurs desire to land Laprovittola as they hope to continue to find success in fielding in talent from overseas.
The Spurs have a lot of players who are not American, with stars like Tony Parker (France), Manu Ginobili (Argentina), Boris Diaw (France), and Patty Mills (Australia) who have all made important contributions for the Spurs to remain as one of the best and most consistent teams in the league.
Now, adding the 26-year-old will definitively give the Spurs a boost as he is a young player who can take the role left by his co-Argentine national Ginobili.
Laprovittola helped Argentina in the Rio Olympics as they reached the quarter-finals of the competition before bowing down after a loss to the United States. In the tournament, Laprovittola averaged 8.2 points in six games and also dished out a number of assists and picked a few steals.
He played in Spain's ACB league for Estudiantes last season and is likely to play a good part if he is taken by the Spurs.
Outside of being a shooting guard who can give quality minutes off the bench, Laprovittola can also be used as a point guard given that Parker is now 34 years old. However, he may need to share minutes with Mills in that position.
There is certainly something that the Spurs see in the Argentine star that will help him fit the mold in the NBA. And if Laprovittola does consider a team to join, then the Spurs is easily one of the best franchises there is.
