'Saturday Night Live' season 42 news: Alec Baldwin parodies Trump; Margot Robbie shows support for Australian marriage equality
"30 Rock" alum Alec Baldwin did a spot-on impression of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and "Suicide Squad" star Margot Robbie backed Australian marriage equality in the premiere episode of "Saturday Night Live" season 42.
The highlight of the season opener, the show's most-watched premiere episode in eight years, was undoubtedly the parody of last Monday's presidential debate. In the cold open, Baldwin's Trump opened with a "braggadocious" statement before attempting to exit the debate just two minutes in.
While various "SNL" cast members have previously impersonated Trump, Baldwin's take was eerily accurate, right down to the tan, the voice, and the facial expressions. The actor also nailed the presidential candidate's various idiosyncrasies and habits, including the odd pronunciation of China, the repeating of phrases, the conspiracy theories, and the sniffling from last week's debate.
"Good evening, America," Baldwin's Trump said in his opening statement, adding, "I am going to be so good tonight. I am going to be so calm and so presidential."
Later, he claimed that his microphone was broken, saying, "She broke it. With Obama. She and Obama stole my microphone. They took it to Kenya. They took my microphone to Kenya, and they broke it, and now it's broken."
"SNL" cast member Kate McKinnon played the part of Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. McKinnon's Clinton took her fair share of hits, with the comedienne poking fun at the former Secretary of State's stiffness and Alicia Machado anecdotes.
Meanwhile, Robbie used her "SNL" hosting gig to make a stand for marriage equality in Australia, her home country.
During the show, Robbie wore a black shirt with the words "Say 'I Do' Down Under" and an image of Australia in rainbow colors.
According to The Guardian, Robbie's shirt is part of a just-launched campaign aimed at legalizing marriage equality in Australia. The campaign is being led by British actor Joshua Sasse, who is currently engaged to Australian singer/songwriter Kylie Minogue.
"Saturday Night Live" season 42 airs Saturdays at 11:30 p.m. EDT on NBC.
