'Scream' season 2 Halloween special air date, spoilers: Is Brandon James really back?
The past is about to catch up with Lakewood when "Scream" airs its Halloween special in October.
In its sophomore year, "Scream" revealed one significant event from the past that hinted at the possibility of Lakewood's allegedly deranged mass murderer being alive.
It turned out that after he was shot and presumed dead, the wounded Brandon James was fished out of the lake by Maggie Duval (Tracy Middendorf) and Miguel Acosta (Anthony Ruivivar). Miguel did not think Brandon could survive his injuries but Maggie suspected otherwise when 20 years later, the killing spree began again with the purpose of tormenting her daughter, Emma Duval (Willa Fitzgerald).
The first season killer was revealed to be Piper Shaw (Amelia Rose Blaire), who turned out to be Maggie's daughter with Brandon. Miguel, who took over as sheriff of Lakewood in season 2, wondered if her death could've lured Brandon back to town.
However, the second season killer didn't turn out to be Brandon, but was instead his daughter's lover, Kieran Wilcox (Amadeus Serafini), who also happened to be Emma's current flame. He was eventually caught and sent to prison. In the last scene of the season 2 finale, Kieran received a phone call that seemed to point at Brandon's seemingly inevitable return.
Has Lakewood's infamous mass murderer really returned? And if he has, could he really be Brandon James?
Aside from hinting on the possibility that Brandon could still be alive, "Scream" season 2 also revealed some subtle details that begged the all important question: Was it really Brandon James who committed those grisly Lakewood murders 20 years ago?
Maggie described him as scared when they met at the dock and she was not at all convinced back then that Brandon could be capable of murder.
Moreover, two seasons have already proven that Brandon's infamous post-op surgical mask could have easily been worn by anyone.
The upcoming Halloween special promises to answer all the hanging questions left by "Scream's" sophomore run, which could also mean that it may just be the series' final installment.
However, GameNGuide cited fan speculations that the Halloween special could very well serve as a jump-off point for a possible third season.
In an interview with TV Line back in August, executive producer Michael Gans and Richard Register refused to confirm if it was really Brandon who called the prison. They claimed to only know the reason why the person called, and that the mystery behind his identity was closely related to the history of Lakewood.
Here is a sneak peek of what to expect when "Scream Halloween Special" airs in October on MTV.
