MTV has renewed its TV series adaptation of the popular horror franchise "Scream." The show's third season is expected to premiere next year. Meanwhile, fans will be treated with a special episode that's slated to launch on Oct. 18.

Variety reported that the third season will be composed of six episodes.

According to reports, "Scream" will be having a massive make-over starting on its third season since showrunners Richard Register and Michael Gans are going to withdraw from the series. Though the pair are expected to leave the show, there has been no official announcements about their replacements.

Variety also pointed out that the replacements will be the third change in three seasons. Jill Blotevogal and Jaime Paglia were the showrunners for the first season, but they quit when the season was over. Register and Gans then took over for season 2.

The network has yet to reveal the details of the upcoming season. So far, MTV has yet to speak up about the casting, setting, plot and the production date for season 3.

To recap, the final episode of the latest season revealed the identity of the killer. The finale titled "When a Stranger Calls" identified Kieran as the villain. As seen in the same episode, the character was alive but was in jail.

In an interview last August, then-showrunner Michael Gans told TV Line that there are immense possibilities for Kieran. "There's so much we can't say about the future — and one of those things, of course, is how Kieran will continue," he told the news outlet. "But he is alive and in prison ... which means anything can happen," he added.

The "Scream" Halloween special will premiere on Tuesday, Oct 18, at 9 p.m. EDT on MTV. Watch out for more updates on "Scream" season 3.
