Arizona Senator John McCain has spoken out regarding criticism of the new film "American Sniper," calling those who criticize the film "obsessive."

McCain released a statement Monday ripping those who criticize the film and commemorating director Clint Eastwood for "an outstanding cinematic achievement."

"This film depicts with subtlety and compassion those brave few who serve our nation in uniform, their experiences in the horror of war, the burdens they often bear upon returning home, and the untold sacrifices of their families," McCain, who ran for president in 2008, said in a statement, "It is deeply regrettable that obsessive critics of U.S. foreign policy have sought to disparage this film and denigrate the memory of a noble American warrior."

Several debates have waged on social media during the past week, with some celebrities criticizing the film and others voicing their support for it. Comedian Seth Rogen and documentarist Michael Moore received criticism for expressing their opposition to the film, while country music stars Blake Shelton and Craig Morgan voiced their support for the movie, an autobiographical look into the life of U.S. Navy SEAL Chris Kyle.

Another Republican politician, Sarah Palin, also defended the film in a recent Facebook post, writing: "Hollywood leftists: while caressing shiny plastic trophies you exchange among one another while spitting on the graves of freedom fighters who allow you to do what you do, just realize the rest of America knows you're not fit to shine Chris Kyle's combat boots."

"May the epic 'American Sniper' bring nothing but blessings to Taya and the children of this true American hero," Palin continued, adding: "Thank you Bradley Cooper and Clint Eastwood for respecting the United States Military."
