'Shameless' season 8 news: Showtime boss David Nevins speaks on Emmy Rossum's recent salary standoff
After last year's tense standoff over salary, Showtime is happy to still have Emmy Rossum for "Shameless" season 8.
Last year, the show's renewal was slightly delayed after Rossum requested for salary parity with co-star William H. Macy. Sources claimed that Rossum's camp allegedly argued that she should be paid more than Macy to make up for the past seven years in which she earned considerably less than him.
Rossum successfully renegotiated her contract prior to the season 8 renewal, and Showtime boss David Nevins recently talked about it during Monday's Television Critics Association press tour. Nevins also praised Rossum for her work on the show as an actress and a director.
"To be clear, it felt like parity was very justified in this case, and we were advocating for it from the beginning," Nevins said. He added that it worked out for both the company and Rossum. "Emmy has been a force on that show in a great way, obviously in front of the camera, but also is a great leader on set, behind the camera. She directed this year and will continue to direct," he went on to say.
The exec went on to say that overall, the network's negotiations with Rossum was a "good process," and he's looking forward to watching the drama go on with her and Macy as the leads.
Speaking with TMZ back in December, Macy expressed his full support of Rossum's decision to renegotiate her salary. Macy's wife, Felicity Huffman, caught up with Entertainment Tonight during Sunday's Golden Globes, and she echoed her husband's opinion on equal pay.
"I mean, Bill loves women and thinks there should be equal rights, and the fact it hasn't been ratified since, what, 1927, is pretty shocking. So of course he's going to stand up and say a woman should make as much as a man," the actress said.
Showtime has yet to announce an official premiere date for "Shameless" season 8, but the series is expected to return later this year.
