Following this episode is "The Lying Detective," which is believed to be based on "The Adventure of the Dying Detective," another tale by Doyle.

This season is expected to be the darkest yet. It will reportedly feature the return of James Moriarty (Andrew Scott), who is being heavily mentioned in trailers.
"Sherlock" season 4 is also expected to see Mary (Amanda Abbington) more involved into her husband Watson and Sherlock's dealings. This is because her past as an assassin, which renders her capable of some action, has already been uncovered.
