'Silent Hills' Release Date Canceled, Latest News: Row Between Developer, Publisher Leads to Launch Cancellation

Norman Reedus appears in the playable teaser for 'Silent Hills.' | KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS

All signs point to the "Silent Hills" game literally remaining silent.

A few days ago, producer Guillermo del Toro disclosed that the game was dead. Actor Norman Reedus ("The Walking Dead"), who was supposed to provide his image and voice to the game, took to Twitter to likewise confirm that the game was not going ahead.

The problem with the game's development started about a month ago when noted game developer Hideo Kojima had a falling out with Konami, the publisher. This problem did not adversely affect the creation of "Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain," which is still on track to be finished this year. However, it brought the development of "Silent Hills" to a stop.

Toro, speaking at the recent San Francisco International Film Festival, said he is no longer working on the game with Kojima and his company Kojima Productions. He said the game "was not going to happen and it broke my greasy heart."

In his Twitter post, Reedus said he "had been looking forward to the game, and was bummed by the news, but was hopeful it would come back around."

The "Silent Hills" project was announced last year via a playable teaser, or PT, available on the PlayStation Network. However, in a recent Q&A released by Konami, the game publisher said the PT will be pulled from the PlayStation Network as the distribution period for it has expired. The publisher also said that since its contract with Reedus had expired, his image from the game's promotional material would be removed.

This means that "Silent Hills," if ever it goes ahead, could be quite different from what was planned before. Expectedly, Hideo Kojima will not be involved in the making of the game.

When the PT was released, Kojima revealed that the game would be extremely scary. After his problems with Konami, it appeared that he would no longer be collaborating with the publisher on any projects and would completely split with Konami once he finishes work on "Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain."
