'Sleepy Hollow' season 4 episode 3 spoilers: Crane faces off with the Headless Horseman once more

A promotional still from "Sleepy Hollow" season 4, episode 3, "Heads of State" | FOX

Ichabod Crane (Tom Mison) cannot seem to shake off his biggest adversaries wherever he goes. The next episode of "Sleepy Hollow" season 4, "Heads of State," sees the return of a familiar creature from his past.

As teased in the previous episode, Washington, D.C. will be visited by one of the most sinister villains that Crane has ever faced — the Headless Horseman.

However, this time in "Sleepy Hollow" season 4, episode 3, it is not Crane that he traveled miles for. His target is the president of the United States and the rest of Washington's highest officials.

Either way, it looks like the Headless Horseman had a run-in with him anyway. Crane was seen in serious trouble being strangled by an unseen someone believed to be his enemy.

In the promo for "Sleepy Hollow" season 4, episode 3, Crane warns Diana (Janina Gavankar) of what they are up against. "Nothing will deter him," he warns his new partner.

The Headless Horseman is one of the most infamous and dangerous enemies that Ichabod has ever faced. He is also known by the name of Abraham Van Brunt and a more sinister moniker, Horseman of Death.

The last time Headless Horseman appeared in "Sleepy Hollow," things between him and Crane were not as tense as they were in the past. Without other option, they worked together to defeat Pandora in the season 3 finale.

While they managed to defeat Pandora, the Headless Horseman lost his head again in the process. He plotted to kill Crane, who convinced him not to do so. Now, it looks like the Headless Horseman will not think twice in killing Crane in "Sleepy Hollow" season 4, episode 3.

The synopsis for the episode also teases that Jake's (Jerry MacKinnon) "extensive knowledge of the tunnels" comes in handy in decoding "the secret from the past that could lead to answers."

"Sleepy Hollow" season 4, episode 3, "Heads of State," airs Friday, Jan. 20, at 9 p.m. ET on FOX.
